AT&T to acquire DirecTV in $48.5 billion deal

AT&T has announced that it is to acquire television service provider DirecTV in a deal worth $48.5 billion.
The move will bring AT&T into direct competition with North America's cable providers, allowing it to provide phone, broadband and video services across the territory.
